I Love Kids

Bloged in Uncategorized by reachingnepal Friday March 31, 2006

Let me share with you a wonderful experiance that happened to me yesterday.

Last night I had dinner with my co-workers and their kids. Being around this family has reminded my why I want to be a daddy one day. I have come to be know by these kids as Uncle “Mussy”. At first I thought the name was Nepali, but come to find out it’s just a made up word for muscles. So anyway, Uncle “Mussy” was sitting on the couch and I had just finished reading three books to Micah. Micah ran off to play and I was sitting there talking with the other “old people”. After a few minites Karuna (their five year old daughter) walks in with a sad look on her face. She climbs up in my lap and I asked her what was wrong. She told me it was a secret and whispered something in my ear. I didn’t make out everything, but I did make out “the people out there don’t know about Jesus.” At this point my heart broke. This little girl was sad because the people all around us didn’t know her Savior. I wrapped my arms around her and told her that was why her Mommy, her Daddy, and I had come to Nepal; to tell those people about Jesus. You could see her face light up and she went on to tell me when she asked Jesus in her heart. We could all learn something from the heart of this little girl. Here is Karuna with my friend David.

Honda Unicorn

Bloged in Uncategorized by reachingnepal Monday March 27, 2006

After much research, asking around, and a few prayers I finally bought a motorbike. I narrowed in down to two bikes: the Bajaj Pulsar 180 and the Honda Unicorn. I had almost decided to buy the Pulsar, but after 4 trips to the showroom and no bike to test drive I got fed up. Each time I went the salesman told me he had a shipment coming in the next day and I could test drive one. Finally I got the idea that they were just tell me what they thought I wanted to hear. The Pulsar had a little bit bigger engine, but because of the poor service and the high respect I have for Honda products; I opted for the Unicorn. It’s a 150cc engine (13.5 hp) with a reputation for having a smooth ride and great gas mileage…oh yeah, it’s cool looking too. Now all I have to do is to get it modified for off-road use. I praise the Lord for His provision with this bike and thank you for giving. Now I ask that you to pray for two more things: pray that I can pass my motorcycle license test and pray that God protects me on the roads in Nepal.

I spent much of the day working on getting a student visa. After today I am beginning to see more clearly the way things work here in Nepal- tons of red tape, pointless procedures, endless waiting, and corruption. Please make my visa a matter of prayer. My current visa runs out in 25 days and I need a new one soon.

Language is going well I have gotten lots of ground work done. I am now at the point where I need to memorize about a million words so that I can begin having conversations. I am still far from doing anything productive in this language, but at least I can do some of the basics. God is good. He shows me that truth everyday.

Flying Home from Thailand

Bloged in Uncategorized by reachingnepal Sunday March 26, 2006

My last two days in Thailand where spent hanging out in Chiang Mai and Bangkok. One night Shyam and I were out late at the night bazaar and we decided we would go and get a foot massage. You can laugh all you want but having an hour long massage from a professional is amazing. Anyway, as we were there we were able to share the Gospel message with the guys giving the massage. Both of these guys sat there ask questions and discussed the differences in Buddhism and Christianity. I am not sure how much they got, but I know they a least understood that there is only one God and Jesus is His name.

One of the lessons I have learned over and over again in my life is that God uses bad circumstances to bring about good things. A prime example would me my flight home from Bangkok. As I checked in, the only seat available was the one right in the middle of two other seats. A great annoyance of any traveler is to get stuck with this seat. As I sat down, I pulled my arms in tight and tried to share what little space the three people in our aisle had. Once we were airborne the guy sitting at the window had to get up so I had to stand up with my laptop that I was typing on. As I stood up the Nepali people around me starting staring at me and then I remembered that I had put a large Nepal sticker on the front of my computer. As I sat down the guy with the aisle seat said, “I am surprised you have my country?s flag on your computer. I went on to tell him of my love for his country and his people. I told him I was there to teach the Bible, a little about the Bible, the God in the Bible. During our conversation the guy sitting at the window came back and began listening to our conversation. As my conversation died down with the “Aisle man”, the “Window guy” broke in with some questions. Just before he left Japan for Kathmandu he had been given some gospel tracts which had made him very interested in the message it carried. From his understanding of Christianity all he had to do was say the prayer on the back of the tract over and over again, hand out the tracts he had been given, and then He would become a Christian. I have no idea where he got this idea, but I made sure he knew his assumptions where wrong. We talked for an hour about Jesus and the Bible, but he knew nothing about our faith at all. It’s hard enough trying to share Christ with someone who has some kind of foundation, but this was REALLY HARD. He had no concept of a God as we understand it, of creation, of any kind of authority, of mercy, or a list of other things. Finally I told him that becoming a Christian was a simple process, but that it would take time for him to understand the truths that he needed to understand. This week I am planning to meet with the “window guy” or Mahendra which is his real name. Pray that God gives me wisdom as I do what Jesus did with the men on the road to Emmaus as I teach the whole counsel of God from Genesis to the resurrection.

With that said, I arrived in Kathmandu and settled back to my “normal” life.

On a different note. I thought I would give you some idea of my everyday life, so here is a picture of my living room. This is where I have my? language lessons and do my quiet time.? A note of interest, all the furniture you see and the rug on the floor were made by hand. Cool huh!

Thailand- Day 4

Bloged in Uncategorized by reachingnepal Friday March 24, 2006

As day four arrived I was preparing for my adventure to end, but little did I know the excitement was just beginning. I woke up with the intention to joining a group who were riding horse through different people groups of Thailand. When I arrived at the front desk to find out when we were leaving the owner told he they had already left. I was a little annoyed because I had told him the night before I wanted to go. Later I found out that my missing the trip was a good thing. As I packed up my gear and rode out of town I saw a few people leaving for the villages on what looked more like a small donkey. In my mind I imagined myself galloping through the countryside on a noble steed and not ?donkey? off of Shrek. As I rode I said a little prayer of thanks that I was spared from the ?donkey? ride.
With my bike cutting through the brisk morning air I saw one of the most beautiful displays of flowers I have ever seen. This garden was located on a hillside in Mae Salong at an elegant hotel.

My goal this day was to ride from Mae Salong to Chaing Ri, turn in my bike, catch a bus for Chaing Mai, and find a guest house for the next two days. The trip to Chaing Ri was as beautiful as they come. Around 9:30am I stopped at a coffee shop over looking a small pond and spent some time with God. After riding another hour or so I came to a sign saying that the ?long-neck? people were on a road to the left. The Karen people were a large unreached people group in Burma that the second wife of Adonirm Judson spent her life reaching. Now there is a substantial number of Karen people living in Thailand. They are also known as ?long-neck people? for there elongated necks with rings around them.? God in His grace gave me a chance to visit several different people groups in this area and to deliver Bibles and gospel tracts to the Karen village.
P1000249P1000262After a wonderful pizza from the ?Pizza Company? and a nice 3 hour bus ride I arrived in the Chaing Mai and meet up with some people from my organization. My time in Thailand was amazing, but to my surprise there was still more to come.

Thailand- Day 3

I woke up early and spent sometimes with God at a local restaurant. After finishing my eggs and orange juice I set out to cross the border of Burma.
As I walked from Thailand to Burma across a bridge that connects the two I noticed changes immediately. First I noticed that the gateway on the Thailand side was at least three stories tall and was brand new. It was a beautiful building where people and cars passed through the center. On the Burma side the gateway was an old shabby metal arch.

Burma and Beyond

Bloged in Uncategorized by reachingnepal Sunday March 12, 2006

Believe it or not I am sitting in an internet shop in the most northern town in Thailand- Mai Sai. I am now convinced that the internet is everywhere. Today I rented a dirt bike and rode around 70 km to the border of Thailand and Burma. Just last month I finished reading the biography of Adoniram Judson and his great miss…ary career in Burma. He gave his whole life so that Burma might know Christ and now? I am going to visit this great land. Praise God! Tomorrow I am going to try and visit both Burma and Laos and then on Tuesday I am going to visit some tribal groups in the hills of Thailand as? I ride horseback (cool huh!). I really don’t know why God lead me here, but I know He did. Pray that I keep my eyes and heart open to Divine appointments.?

Today I met with some Philippino workers who have a church in Changi Ri. I was able to deliver many tracks, Bibles, and the book “Tortured for Christ”. This literature was in the Thai and Karen languages. I still have some literature with me and hope to hand out the rest as? I travel.?

Here are some pictures of the Thailand/Burma border. Miss you all.

I’m Off

Well our conference is over and I am heading out the door to catch a bus to Changi Ri. I have a contact there and I might even preach during tomorrows service, but the plans after that are still a little shaky. I know God lead? me to go here and? I know He will continue to lead. Pray for me. Pray for oppurtinuties. Pray for great things.

Thailand

Bloged in Uncategorized by reachingnepal Wednesday March 8, 2006

I am sitting here in a coffee shop in Chang Mai, Thailand writing you of my adventures. Yesterday Shyam and I flew through Bangkok to Chang Mai for a conference of theological education. There are two main reasons I am here at the conference. One is to learn more about this school so that I can finish my masters degree and the second reason is to hopefully bring this seminary’s extention program to Kathmandu. Pray that God opens the doors for both of these things to happen.

My plan was to spend 4 days here at the conference and then to fly to southern Thailand for a vacation, but I now know God has other plans. While flying to Thailand I was listen to a sermon by John Piper called “Doing missions when dying is gain”. God really convicted me about my desire to “relax” on the beach. I realized that if I truly belive what? I have been preaching for years then I need to use this chance to do something radical for God. So on Saturday I am going to load up a backpack full of Bibles and tracks and head to the Golden Triangle of Thailand. The Golden Triangle is a place where Thailand, Burma, and Laos all meet. This area has a very high concentration of unreached people groups and is very hostile to the Gospel. PRAY! I feel lead to make this trip and I am begging my prayer supporters to ask God to use me. Ask Him to use this trip to save souls and do great things for the kingdom. We must all remember that suffering is not just a result of doing missions, but the very? means of it . Remember that God is sovereign and that all He does is good.

Jen’s taking over nathan’s blog

Bloged in Uncategorized by reachingnepal Sunday March 5, 2006

Hey all of Nathan’s faithful readers. This is Jenn and I just wanted to take over his blog for one entry. Thanks to all my friends and family who have prayed for me while I was here. It has been an incredible time for me, and for all of you that were wondering I defiantly still feel VERY called here (sorry mom). Nathan and I just returned from house fellowship with my friends from this summer– and before that we played a mean volleyball game. It’s hilarious because the people at the Bible college think I actual have volleyball skill. What are they thinking? They don’t know skill obviously.

I have been so blessed to get to reconnect with all of my friends that I had built relationships with this past summer when I was here. It has been great to get to introduce them to Nathan. Pray specifically for my friend Prabin who had worked at the hotel this summer– he came to our party at Nathan?s and got to meet all of the Bible college students. Pray that he gets to continue to get to know Nathan and comes to know Jesus.

Anyways– just wanted to let y?all know (even those of you I don’t know and that didn’t know I was here) that God has blessed me so much on my trip. Please keep praying for my next few days. Thanks so much

Jenn
